What type of Cinema will Olympic be?
The aim is to create a local boutique style cinema, with great sound and picture, big comfy seats and plenty of leg-room, which is open to all.

What sort of films will be shown?
A broad range of current releases will be screened (including 3D); from quality blockbusters to world cinema, retrospectives and critically acclaimed independent releases.

How many screens will there be?
2 cinema screens are planned. What was recording ‘Studio 1’ will become the main screen with 125 armchair style seats and comfortable double sofas. Downstairs, in what was ‘Studio 2’ there will be around 65 seats. In both screens there will be plenty of room to stretch your legs, bring a drink in, as well as a snack or two, and generally make yourself at home.

What else will be in the building?
In addition to the main cinema screen, there will be a café and dining room on the ground floor, a Members bar on the first floor and a Tuck Shop to obtain cinema-friendly snacks and drinks.

A little later in the year the recording studio and Screen 2 will open. When not screening general release films, Screen 2 can be booked for anything from corporate screenings to children’s parties.

For a more in depth outline of the planned spaces, take a look at the ABOUT page.

When will it open?
Although building works are progressing apace, changes in plans for the café and dining room, kitchens and bar have meant our timings were pushed back a little and we are now aiming for Spring 2013. We are working hard to ensure that we get it right, not just on time.

Will it be members only?
The cinema will be open to everybody. Membership will be available for those looking for priority access, preferential booking and discounted seating. Membership will also gain entry to special events held at the cinema such as pre-release screenings, Q&A's with filmmakers and other exclusive members-only events. See our membership page for further details

Will it be child-friendly?
Absolutely. Weekends and school holidays we will be showing films for our younger cinemagoers, whilst the restaurant will welcome children of all ages. We intend to cater for their tastes without filling them full of junk food.

Will there be disabled access?
Yes. There will be full provision for wheelchair users, accessible toilets and facilities for the hard of hearing.

Will there be parking?
No. We hope the majority of our audience will be local, therefore not requiring the need for parking. Bike racks will be available. For those outside the area the cinema is supported by good transport links. Further instructions on how to get to the Olympic will be posted closer to opening.

Will noise be a problem for local residents?
Having housed a recording studio for the last fifty years, the building is soundproofed to a better standard than modern cinemas. It has managed to withstand the likes of The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix and U2 so we don't foresee any problems with sound leakage. We also understand that it is important to keep opening hours in line with other Church Road restaurants and pubs.

How could it affect the local area?
We are local residents and care about Barnes. Nobody likes change but we don't like seeing the high street full of empty shops. We want nothing better than to see the area enhanced by the recreation of its local cinema. As well as a place for residents to enjoy, we envisage the cinema attracting audiences from a wider vicinity, which can only benefit local shops and businesses.

Will there be opportunities for employment?
Absolutely. We welcome CVs from cinema-addicts, administration fiends, and hospitality aficionados.

How can I get involved?
If you have specific questions, worries, suggestions or general enquiries, write or email.

How will the building’s unique heritage be represented?
We are planning to document the history; throughout the building, and in a printed format; as well as maintaining a small recording studio for budding recording artists. If you have memories of the building throughout its life as a cinema, theatre or recording studio, please get in touch, we would love to hear from you.
